Phryne, Queen of Athens

Phryne Poster.webp

Witness the world premiere of this lush feast of a drama.

Phryne, Queen of Athens, is a striking and inventive character study of the most influential courtesan of Ancient Greece. Best known for her famous trial, the illustrious priestess of Aphrodite captivated the denizens of Athens with her beauty, wit, and devotion to the vulnerable. The audience meets the play's titular character at the precipice of wild celebrity, immediately before she is immortalized by the sculptor Praxiteles in the still-famed statue, Aphrodite of Knidos. As her love for her longtime paramour and renowned orator Hypereides is challenged by the fresh desire of the influential Euthias, Phryne battles betrayal and suffocating mores in her struggle to maintain her faith in the goddess who once lifted her high.

The Stag and Lion Theatre, in the words of its founder, brings a long lost style back to theatre. In the old days, before the 20th century, the theatre was vibrant with a life between actor and audience, between their reality and ours. We do not think the audience should be regulated to sitting like good boys and girls in the dark, but to be in our world with us. Our stage is wooden, our amber lights make it glow, and you will be transported back in time to a theatre experience like no other.
