The Duchess of Malfi | The Stag & Lion Theatre | A Tragedy by John Webster

 

Defying the commands of her hawkish brothers, the recently widowed Duchess of Malfi remarries in secret to a man below her station. When their hidden marriage is discovered by her brothers, they resort to strange and cruel punishments as means of retribution. As the events unfold, the lives of these characters descend further into chaos and alienation.

 

Inspired by true events, John Wesbter's The Duchess of Malfi is a scathing account of violence, sex and passion in 16th century Italy. Although considered one of the greatest (and bloodiest) tragedies of the English Renaissance, it is rarely seen on stage.

 

House Theatre Group's electrying new production is equal parts wittily madcap and viciously raw.

 

Director Michael DeFilippis has collected a troupe of master craftspeople. Starring as The Duchess is Krymov Lab NYC's breakout star Shelby Flannery (known on The CW's The 100 as Hope), with Jared Kemp (Marvel’s Luke Cage, Hulu’s High Maintenance), Francisco Arcila (Winner, 2015 Arthur Wagner Award For Acting), Emmy winner Scott Gordon, Member at The Stag and Lion Brian Mendoza, star of a new Moisés Kaufman World Premier Elysia Roorbach, and Gianna Kiehl (Hanna, Amazon Prime). Technical direction by Martha Graham Dance Company's Grady Shea. Costume design by Eva Espenshade.
